Many
parents are beginning to worry about the dangers of using plastic baby bottles.
The media has reported many stories regarding the harmful side effects of using
plastic baby bottles to feed your baby. The concerns are mostly regarding the potential
toxicity of Bisphenol A (BPA), a petrochemical used to make polycarbonate
plastics and resins. It’s commonly found in clear plastic water bottles
(recycling code 7), the linings of tin cans and plastic baby bottles.
This
petrochemical has been known for many years to act like a synthetic estrogen
and has been linked to increasing the probability of developing hormone-related
illnesses such as breast and prostate cancer as well diabetes and infertility.
The Canadian government has started a major initiative to reduce the exposure
to BPA in all consumer products.
In
the mean time, what can we do? If you want to reduce your baby’s exposure to
BPA, switch to powdered formula from canned formula and switch to glass baby
bottles. Many companies such as Thermo Baby offer great alternatives to plastic
baby bottles.
