The baby crib is one of the first items you might begin shopping
for once you discover you will be having a baby. Keep in mind that this is
possibly one of the most important purchases you will be making, among many. To
put things into perspective, this is the one thing you will be purchasing that
you intend to leave your baby in for long periods of time and often unattended.
Hence why we believe all the necessary precautions should be taken to ensure
the safest resting environment for your baby. Your baby will probably be using
his/her crib for 2 to 3 years, or until they are ready to move on to a toddler
bed.
The best for your child does not necessarily mean the one you
think will fit best with the décor in your baby’s room or the one that is on
liquidation. There are standards that should be followed when choosing a crib.
I will try to outline what I believe are the most important issues to look for.
1) Cribs come in a wide variety of finishes, paints, stains, and
lacquers. Make sure that all are lead free. As we all know babies love to chew
on anything they can get their hands on. So we wouldn’t want them chewing on
any toxic materials.
2) Choose a crib that offers a solid construction. Sometimes
babies may get very active in their crib and lean on the side rails, or
sometimes parents may lean in and pick up their baby while leaning on the crib.
All this added weight might be a problem if the crib is not constructed with
quality material and craftsmanship.
3) Although decorative detailing may be pleasing to the eye, it
may cause problems for your baby. We do not recommend purchasing any cribs that
have decorative features that may cause your baby to get trapped. These
decorative features may look solid and sturdy when the crib is new but with
time may loosen and become a serious issue.
4) Make sure the crib is made of top quality wood. The cheaper
cribs may be a little less expensive at first, but they will not provide the
stability needed. Keep in mind that you may be considering having more children
in the future, and purchasing a solid crib might just save you money in the long
run.
